A Sustainable Physical Development Framework of Urban Village: A Case Study on New Salak South Village
Abstract
Urban villages are the manifestation of urban community settlement which are formed through urbanization. Generally, in urban planning design and development, an urban village typically consists of small to medium-density housing, mixed-use zoning, decent public transit with user-friendly pedestrianization and public spaces. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, each notable urban villages, contain their own characteristics which reflects a certain group of residents’ history, culture, background of the village, local organizations, physical morphology in the formation of the urban environment, and its relationship with the Kuala Lumpur city center. The sustainability of an urban village needs to be integrally shaped by all spectrums of social, political, economic and physical environment. This paper aims to study and propose a prototype of a sustainable physical framework in an effort to better the urban villages and its local community in Kuala Lumpur. Due to scarcity of scholastic journals on sustainable physical development of urban villages in Malaysia, this paper will attempt to narrow the research gap.

Exploring Key Factors Influencing University Choice: An Empirical Study on Malaysian Students Using Structured Equation Analysis
Abstract
This study aims to explore key factors that could influence high school students’ college choice decision and offer higher education institutions a clear picture on the voice of their key stakeholders. High school respondents participated in the qualitative and quantitative studies. In depth interviews and self administered questionnaires was utilized in this triangulation study. The results suggested that there is the positive relationship between program, university reputation, employment opportunity, pricing, security, education and campus facilities, events, location, peers and friends, mentoring and college choice decision. Gender played a moderating role in program, pricing, and facilities. This research was limited to a small size, only 90 respondents which is considered very small compared to other researches conducted previously. Findings of this research is to narrow the scope for higher education's stakeholders to review and develop appropriate strategies in order to promote their particular institutions through better knowledge by focusing on the factors that could significantly impact college choice decisions. The key contribution of this paper is its triangulation approach which applied a combination of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Evaluating the Design of Student Union Complex from a Student Empowerment Perspective
Abstract
The relationship between student unions and a sense of community on campus has been much discussed and written in journals, articles, and books. However, the relationship between students and the communities outside the university has been an under researched area, and no empirical evidences exists to confirm this relationship. This makes it a relevant issue which merits a proper study to evaluate both the strengths and deficiencies of local universities in terms of social engagement which may affect the students’ learning outcome/s. This study evaluated two regional student centers from the perspective of belonging and social space.

An Evaluation on the Existing Disaster Relief Centers in Malaysia in terms of Mental and Physical Relief Perception
Abstract
This paper aims to evaluate existing disaster relief centers in Malaysia, focusing on the concept of a school as a disaster relief center as proposed by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) from the perspective of mental and physical relief for the disaster victims. This evaluation was done on two (2) disaster relief centers at Kampung Baru Pahi, Kuala Krai, Kelantan as a case study and a proposal to convert the school into a disaster relief center done by PAM alongside interviews with NGO volunteers. The research finding shows that there was a miss concern on mental relief topic on the design or plans of a disaster relief center in Malaysia. Mental relief should be taken care of together with physical relief. Therefore, current responses and procedures for disaster management models should be reviewed and mental relief should be input into the architectural design in disaster relief centers in order to provide a full relief environment and program for victims during and after the disaster.
